We are a long way from the classic European enlightenment idea of the university as place of disinterested place of learning and development of knowledge for humanity's benefit.
But is the university in the West just an adjunct of the business sector? What about the university in the East which comes from a very different tradition?
And the university in the global South always needed to tie in with national development, is that imperative gone now?
If it work independently without the help of the academy is to limit the scope and technological advances at the service of society...

We are definitely moving towards a global conception of university functioning. There is consensus in the guidelines for evaluating university quality and, the latter, determines the inevitable interconnection with economic imponderables.
