For physical work to be done, there must be displacement of the system, change in kinetic energy, change in potential energy or any combination of these. Especially, in situations involving living organisms like us, there is a need for a redefinition, or augmentation of the definition of physical work. For example, a man pushing a wall for hours together does no physical work, since there is no displacement! Similarly, the sun does no work in making the earth go round it year after year, since there is no change in K.E. and gravitational force is perpendicular to velocity (circular orbit)! A coolie/porter walking a distance with the luggage on head does no work, since force is perpendicular to velocity! And so on and so forth.

Although these examples are cited in physics as glaring examples of deviation in meaning of a word work, from that in ordinary parlance, there is absolutely no reason why this unsatisfactory state of affairs should be persisted with. Instead, we should try to redefine/augment the concept of work.

Have there been any attempts in this regard?
