I heard prior to the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The Australian Olympic Committee went into Schools and looked for students with specific attributes i.e. Potentially good swimmers would be tall, big shoulders and large feet for example. By doing this they were selecting athletes with the natural attributes (talent) for a specific sport. Obviously once these potential athletes were selected they still needed to have the commitment and drive to train but where already blessed with the physical attributes.

Whether not not this is true, i'm not sure. However, in principle it makes sense. Could this philosophy be applied to other areas. Could we be selecting naturally gifted children who show excellence in mathematics for example and start training them in engineering or complex programming, for specific roles within society.

No, there needs to be drive and determination to apply the talent. There is a saying hard work beats talent, when talent doesn't work hard. That said, someone who is talent and hard working will be unstoppable.

I believe it is more appropriate to first evaluate the individual elements of: creativity, innovation, inventiveness, others. In this way it will be possible to understand which of the elements have more influence in obtaining achievements and development. All collaborate to some degree for the development of society, but we must know that each element may have a greater or lesser influence in different contexts. In theory, this greater degree of influence of one or another element will favor better conquests and development in the society. I mean that the question may be on how to balance those elements that make up the talent.

Talent alone is absolutely not enough. Talent needs to be upgraded; improved,skilled and processioned. This can be achieved when talent is learned about, trained on. Then use it effectively & efficiently and in ethical manner, and keep continuous learning on it. But what about untalented people. Not all community are talented. They just need to determine what they want/their goal and what they already have (skills,...) and/or need to have, to achieve their goal. Then, the same advise for upgrading talent will be done for their skills. When both talented and untalented people USE their talents/SKILLS effectively & efficiently and in ethical manner, They are contributing to their community development and hence achievement..... and this is not enough, this is just a start.

Angela Duckworth's important book, GRIT: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, provides documentation as to why talent is often not enough. Passion and perseverance often make up for great talent. Talent cannot be discounted -- but it is often over-valued.

Here is a reference to a paper I co-authored that addresses "flair factors" which are often the keys to success. This paper should give you a clearer perspective about the requirements to succeed and the limitations of pure talent.
