We normally finds many rural communities to be spraying ashes of firewood generated during cooking,in the kitchen garden on the soil and also on the plant surface hoping to add nutrition to the soil, reduce pest and disease occurrence. How far it is good?? Can this be practiced as a supportive idea and alternatives to different chemicals in rural areas,if possible?
Ashes contain minerals which are good for plants. Perhads if you spray them over leaves, some aphids or fungy could die and that is another reason why they can be healthy. But normally I would reccomend only to apply on the soil or if they are rainfeed the plants, because excess of ashes over the leaves will not allow to receive the sun light..
It is good and old technique.Nowdays this type of method is very rarely used. It also repels insects and provides nutrient to soil ( potash ).If there are no alternative treatments it would be some how effective..
Mr. Navaraj upadhyaya it may be but i don't think so because use of ash is decreasing these days.In most of the places use of ash is least although it is very good for IPM but it gives late response and least amount of nutrients.
Dear Navaraj, Is not there any scientific explanation of its significance in crop production? If they are very helpful in agriculture why aren't they recommended in the rural areas where there is no any problem for woodash? How can we raise the confidence of farmers to use ash?

Can these be practiced as such in rural communities then. If it is so, then why is not this much popular?? Can there be any effective methods of application or any form of application that could help this practice to gain maximum efficiency. If this could happen, then it could be the suitable alternatives to chemical fertilizers..
I think we should run an experiment to seed what is the best method for each species to absorb nutrients, with different levels of ashes, watering, periods, then, we can define a certain method, because I am sure that it will depend on species, place and soil.
It is said that ash is rich in potassium. Can that be the reason for the disease resistance character of the plant due to its spray in the plant??
