Sloughing in most cases is due to natural microbial die off. So let it be a batch mode or continuous mode MBBR, sloughing is bound to happen at one point of time.
First, consider detachment. There are several modes of biomass detachment from a biofilm surface. First is NORMAL detachment whish is due to growth, second is SLOUGHING which is the loss of chucks due to poor biofilm thickness control. And, there are others. Normal detachment exists in MBBRs because the hydrodynamic shear exerted on the biofilm surface acts to provide excellent biofilm thickness control.
