Minimally invasive surgery technique has taken the central role in modern surgery specially in abdominal surgery. So, every surgeons need to get trained into the field of minimally invasive surgery.
Training by using simulation technology (with virtual reality) allows the surgeon to learn or improve their laparoscopic surgical skills in a safe and stress free environment.
Various simulation training sets ( you know, they are different from conventional "endotrainer", as they contains computerized system which visually mimic and imitate operative response of an organ/part like whole Gall bladder+CBD+ structures of calot's triangle+ liver bed.... everything as seen during lap cholecystectomy ) are available in the market for hands on training in laparoscopic and robotic surgery.Quality of some of the machines, specially one with 3D technology, is really good.They give near real views with operative response of that particular abdominal parts and even a very realistic view of the operation theater as well.
But the simulation sets are not widely available in all the institutes.
I invite all learned surgeons to share their views on simulation techniques as a methods of laparoscopic surgical training and inputs about the cost and names of the companies that supply them.
Dear Dr Bakshi, simulation offers a big support for Lap training in terms of hand eye coordination, instrument handling, understanding lack of tactile feedback, etc. Hours spent in simulation translate to development / reinforcement of skill sets. Exposure through various organisations (IAGES, AMASI, ASI), webinars, specific training programmes, etc would give a practical working knowledge on how to go about. All the best !
i completely agree that the role of simulation is to significantly improve hand eye coordination, instrument handling required in the Laparoscopic procedures. With advanced self-help training the needed skill is obtained.

Simulation is a good way of hand eye coordination training, but, to my mind, there are more useful methods for treating animals or animal organic complexes
Dear Sir, simulation has been proven to have a significant role in training in both basic and advanced laparoscopic surgery. This has been incorporated into the curriculum of some training programa. Whilst initially there are expensive applications for this, most recently there are cheaper and affordable simulators. Training in the future Will almost likely revolve mainly on simulation before graduating to live surgery. European Society of Gynaecological endoscopist ESGE has training programs based on simulation and dry labs I think.
Simulation is crucial and it can be more accurate in animals. You need to have a specific center for that such as an anatomic surgical lab.
