For a commercial operation unless the ore is very high grade, neither smelting option would be economically efficient. Hydrometallurgy, ie leaching and then electrowinning generally would be far more suitable. But this is difficult to judge without knowing the ores being treated.
Hydrometallurgical Processes in Extractive Metallurgy of Zinc includes Roasting (Pyrometallurgy) (Environmental problem evolving SO2 gas into the atmosphere!!!), Leaching and Electrowinning and maybe after electrowinning it needs another casting process to produce Zinc Ingot. In general, I think Imperial Smelting (IS) method is more suitable for low grade Zinc oxide (i.e. Smitsonite) ore. Because it includes only pyrometallurgical processes. Am I Wrong?
