Religion is an institutionalized (dumbed down for the masses) philosophy.
There are (at the very least) two books worth reading on the subject, IMO:
(1) From Religion to Philosophy, by Francis M. Cornford;
(2) Ancient Art and Ritual, by Jane Ellen Harrison (or any of her books for that matter).
Fortunately, both these classics are in the public domain (or so I believe), so you shouldn’t have a problem finding them on the Internet.

Religion is as old as humanity, philosophy is a discourse based spirituality that gradually emerged after millena of civilisation around 800BC among elite merchant educated aristocrat class on the persian plateau in the greek cities of miletus and also in India. In Asia, the philosophical tradition were explicitly religious like in Vedanta or Buddhism and more focus on disciplines self-transformation while in the west, these aspect of ancient philosophy gradually were displaced in favor of discourse about the world and societies.
