The Eyewire project is running to find the retinal CONNECTOME. The connection between each neuron would get new connections and loose old connections in the aging process. The concept of partialling the brain parts (vision area, auditory etc.) to reveal each CONNECTOME and making a single frame is a hypothetical view.
I do not know but recently President Obama has sanctioned a huge sum to map human mind and the project is to be completed in a decade on the pattern of human genome project. May be this mapping also involve mapping of these connections. If it will be a success, this wiil not be a hypothetical case.
Hope the study results would reveal facts and frame the network. But systematically how this could be possible by mapping separate parts of brain and making it as single network..?
I think mapping some smaller populations of cells is, perhaps possible, but not individual cells, where there is a clear system complexity barrier even with Zador’s sequencing tools. This barrier is present when it’s said that those groups of cells behave in the same homogeneous way, where is in reality there is no such thing. Yet this can be a significant advance and having such long political commitment is very good for neuroscience in general.
