Only the component in the motion direction is effective. If you install the dumper in motion direction it will be 100% effective, on other hand, if you install it perpendicular to motion direction it will be useless

The basic principle is that, a controller is effective if the controlled variable is observable at the controller port (or attachment). Now, you wish to control midspan vibrations of a simple supported beam. The midspan vibrations in this case is dominated by the first bending mode. The 2nd mode has no contribution at midspan, while the 3rd has smaller contribution. As I understood, you plan to attach the damper horizontally at the roller support. This would be ineffective for two reasons; (1) the vertical vibrations are not measurable in the horizontal direction; and (2) the significant vibration modes are not observable at the end support.
