The pedstrains should be counted based on the camera visuals and the data should be evaluated to turn on and off the traffic lights for the pedstrains around.
Yes, pedestrian counting technology is already in use. It typically involves computer vision systems that analyze camera visuals to detect and count pedestrians. This data can then be utilized to manage traffic lights and enhance pedestrian safety in urban environments.
From my little background, it is indeed counted. The reason is to track the number of pedestrians passing through specific areas or routes which is essential for city management to understand foot traffic patterns, enhance safety measures, and assist in urban development. This is normally performed using AI technology or even old methods such as cameras, sensors, and mobile apps.
Yes the technology to count pedestrians is available in multiple forms. Simplest version is the manual count, sophisticated version is using 24-hr sensors or cameras.
I am unclear whether you mean signals for pedestrian movements need to rely more on pedestrian presence (through camera visuals) rather than having an automated pedestrian phase.
If this is your question, in my experience at signals control, the ped phase is extended based on technology such as Pelican and PUFFIN, where the presence of pedestrians still crossing is detected and the green light extended to allow pedestrians to continue crossing safely.
In some signal programming, the pedestrian phase is triggered with the pressing of the pedestrian button, otherwise the green phase is based on the length of the green required for vehicle movement only (ie not lengthened due to pedestrian crossing). The number of pedestrians, as far as I am aware, is not considered, just the presence and linking of the ped phase with vehicle green phase.
On the streets there are lots of infra-light based counters. For example Eco Counter (a french company) makes lots of different counters, I have worked with them in the past. There are all kind of counters, on their website you can find more detail about the technology in each.
