Open access publishing has come to stay, at least, for the foreseeable future. The benefits seems clear: researchers don't have to depend on per article/ per issue payment or on personal/ institutional subscriptions. This represents a significant paradigm shift.

However, as more and more journals shift to open access practice, publishing articles will require more funds.

In the developing countries, funded research opportunities are few and far between compared to developed and upper-middle income countries. Researchers based in low-income developing countries may find it daunting to get their manuscripts through to publication in journals that operate solely on open access. What impact would this have on researchers from such developing countries? Helpful or hurtful?
