Is octenidine appropriate for pre-operative Staph aureus decolonization to prevent surgical site infection?
We are looking for antiseptics that will be effective in preventing Staph aureus surgical site infection in patients known to be colonised with Staph aureus. Octenidine has been suggested and we are seeking studies to confirm or refute this.

I suppose reducing post surgical site infection rate is dependent on addressing multiple variables or bundle as opposed to addressing variables individually.
Choice of antiseptic will depend on your insitutional antibiogram.

We already adress other bundle rrecommendations (antibiotic prohylaxis, skin antisepsis, BGL control, warming, etc), but still see SSI and associated bacteraemias with Staph aureus, so this is an additional step.

It decreases staphylococcal load at pre-operative site. Thus it could have beneficial role. But remember, Staphylococcus is skin commensal. If you treat excessively, it will soon lead to emergence of resistant Staph.s .
