I happen to find an argument from a laboratory saying that in porcelain-fused-to-metal prostheses especially bridge work, they like to use porcelain in the pontic all around and metal on hidden sides of connectors. Is it necessary, just fashion or has some negative effects?

When you think about porcelain-fused-to-metal prosthesis (bridge work), laboratories always use porcelain around all the metal. What assures the safety of such process is the rigidity of the chosen metal. There is always a risk of porcelain delamination in the future, since there are tensile stresses in gingival areas of connectors, but for aesthetical reasons it is justified. Another option is the use of a polycrystal ceramic as framework.
