Is it that difficulty in making NBT phase by using mortar and pestle grinding instead of ball mill for proper mixing ?

Dear all, I am currently preparing NBT phase by using solid state route. I took Na2CO3, Bi2O3 and TiO2 in stoichiometric amount of each. I grinded those by using mortar and pestle about 5hrs instead of going for ball mill. After that, during calcination at 800 degree Celsius, I m getting melted form of my powder. Can anyone here suggest me or tell me what is happening in that process please ?
