I have a parallel mediation model. I am wondering if it is possible for the second mediator variable to simultaneously act as a moderator in a seperate relationship within the same model?
So...
1) M2 mediates the relationship between IV and DV
2) M1 mediates the relationship between IV and DV (conditional on M2).
Any help is appreciated!
It really depends.
I have manage to conduct real mediation in the warn-torn Central African Republic. It is really up to the parties in conflict (or the two parties involved) if they ACCEPT the role of the mediators/moderators. What experience tells me is that the parties involved will show some will to play ball only if the main mediator (mediator 1) has the overall control of the situation, and has realistic expectations about the outcome. The other mediator can assist with cultural, technical, and maybe some other areas of expertise, but in the end everyone at that table is looking at the guy who is calling the shots at any moment.
Leadership, Perseverance, Cultural Awareness and identifying the main problem are the key to solve any issue. Perhaps it is not the role of the mediator to intervene proposing solutions, but to identity gaps and common areas between both parties.
Statistically, there is nothing wrong with the idea, you can simply include the ineraction of M1*M2 into the model (therefore, M1 is also moderator for M2 on Y/DP). But this makes no sense if you really want to show a causal relationship (which is very often the goal of mediation analyses). Strictly speaking, you cannot show a causal relationship in a cross-sectional study. I just assume that you want to show this. But in the model above, IV influecnes M1 and M2 where M2 will also influencen the relationship between M1 and Y. It would be more convincing if you Assess IV at T1, M1 and M2 at T2 and use them as predictor for Y/DP at T3 (of course all variables should be assesed at all time points to catch the time dependent within correlations).
