Is it possible to use molecular modeing to explain why optical brighteners fluoresce based on their chemical and crystal structures?

Extended conjugation and/or aromaticity could be a possible cause! But how to correlate the fluorescent property of absorbing light of a particular wavelength to crystalline/amorphous nature of solid (XRD data)?
