Is it possible to use magnetic or electrostatic field to deflect
or stop bullets. I am thinking about writing a research paper on this
point and need some help regarding the topic. As this will be a great
defensive measure and even slowing the bullets will also do the same
job by reducing the damage.
The speed of the bullet when fired will be some where around 890-1220 m/s. To deflect the fast moving bullet you have to apply an extensive magnetic field. It may be no good. Electrostatic would be difficult, because the bullet would have to be electrically charged, and in general case this cannot be controlled.
But magnetic field could be used for bullets made out of solid metal. In theory of course. Much depends on the distribution of the field, etc. The field could slow down the bullet due to Lorentz forces and this can be calculated knowing the geometry of the bullet, the distribution and intensity of the magnetic field, etc.
It is actually quite an interesting problem. I would not mind cooperating on such paper?
