High peak power pulsed laser diodes (HPLD) of the type designed for LIDAR and other ranging applications have previously been used for photoacoustic imaging. These studies suggest that, despite the much lower intrinsic pulse energy of a single element HPLD (~µJ) compared to Q-switched Nd:YAG based laser systems (mJ), it is possible to achieve adequate SNR for superficial imaging applications.
