Any device relying on Alpha, theta or Beta "bands" for tracking and subsequent reinforcement will most definitely NOT be able to tell if the brain in question is surging with intrusive mental imagery, with racing mind in response to surges in mental fog, t just racing mind as a common state for that person, to surges in mental fog which can be mistaken for "mindfulness", or pick up on the user interfering with the training by trying to mentally see the desired change as is is "reinforced".

Rossana, hi. The two most commonly used neurofeedback frameworks (that are multi-hardware-vendor), are Bioexplorer and BioEra. Bioexplorer does support EPOC. It looks like BioEra does not currently.

Neuromore has some unique features if you can get it. But the other two packages are more widely used. For example BioEra is the underlying framework behind the Cygnet and LENS systems.

In the early days of EPOC, they were making it difficult to access the raw EEG, you had to pay significantly more for the "research SDK" to access raw info. There are now some alternatives.

A significant downside of EPOC for neurofeedback is the awkward and fixed 10-20 site positioning used. If you had more flexible hardware you could use Pete Van Deusen's Brain-Trainer protocols.

William unfortunately Emotiv EPOC+ is no longer compatible with Bioexplorer, the older version used to be.

I am trying some stuff with OpenViBe and hopefully it will work.

Do you recommend any books for figuring out the best training protocols for attention, lowering stress and concentration training?

I would start by purchasing and studying Pete Van Deusen's Brain-Trainer assessment and protocol training suite. Although it is geared towards Bioexplorer, you can learn a lot from what his group has created over decades of development. You will need a Bioexplorer access to study the designs. You might be able to see Pete's designs with the trial version, but only run them briefly (trial is time limited). Would be up to you to translate these somehow to OpenViBE. OpenViBE is not nearly as adaptable to neurofeedback as is BioEra or Bioexplorer.

Books I would recommend are the Richard Soutar / Rob Longo text and Demos.

Unfortunately Emotiv is pretty much anti-research. They have made it impossible to use their equipment with any custom software development and also stopped being compatable with most non-Emotiv software. Unless you have the older Emotive equipment, it may not be compatible with OpenVibe any longer. Beware!

I am sorry to see this happen as I was an early supporter of Emotiv, but their newer equipment is just too closed off to use anymore. I recommend almost any other equipment vendor if possible.

Thank you for the information Matthew, I agree with you, using Emotiv EPOC+ to do research is not the best option since there is no way to go around Emotiv Pro and with that research becomes too expensive.

Hi, We created our own python-based data collection software for the Epoc headset. We exported the raw data into Matlab for analysis. For my purpose of time series FFT analysis by band, region, or single electrode it worked well. Its basic, no bells and whistles, but if anyone is interested. I can share.
