Hi everyone, I'm currently doing a dissertation on gambling. I've been told to keep my questionairre as short as 10 minutes (15-20) questions. All gambling scales for motivation/problem gambling are all too long (20 each atleast). I need demographic questions also. Basically I was wondering am I able to edit and shorten these scales BEFORE sending out the survey? Is this allowed? Or is there a way I can shorten but justify it properly? Any help would be extremely appreciated. Thanks!
If you can find a detailed description of one of your scales, you might be able to shorten it. In particular, if someone reported a factor analysis of their scale, you could use the subset of the items that had the highest loadings.
Beyond that, if all your questions use the same "stem" (beginning phrase) and the same response format (probably 1-5, strongly disagree to strongly agree), it will probably take less than 15 seconds per item, so about 5 minutes for the whole scale. You could easily pre-test this to find out.
You can shorten the number of items in a questionnaire, or the number of responses on a Likert scale. However, you need to conduct a study using the original survey and the short version and compare responses and validity/reliability measures to prove that the short version could be used instead.
Yes you can but you'll need to check again the validity and reliability of your questionnaire.
