I am a first-year PhD student, and my PhD programme is meant to be finished in 3 or 4 years. I have noticed that people usually do it in 4 years, while some stay for even longer. Of course, I understand the reasons and that it is quite a normal practice, taking into consideration the fact that PhD is not an easy task. However, I wonder if I can do it in three years and what may I need for it? So, I would be grateful for all your comments and recommendations on that subject.
P.S. I need to add that I am working quite actively and doing good in terms of the research and studies in general. So, I know that it requires a lot of effort.

Yes, of course, it is possible to do so. This is especially true if your master's thesis work can be used to jump-start your dissertation. Most people can't do that, and they focus on coursework for the first two years or so, which leaves them starting more-or-less from scratch on the dissertation at year 2. You can't reliably predict the pace of innovation from scratch, and people tend to want to have some publications from their dissertation work during their PhD experience, so that takes a couple of years and sometimes more.
So I'd say it's all about the head start. If you have one, then 3 years is possible. If not, then it's quite unlikely.

Length of time to complete PhD varies by area of study. PhDs in the natural sciences tend to be completed the quickest while those in the Humanities are longest. The social sciences are between these two. To get through your program more quickly take your qualifying exams on time. Also investigate those PhD dissertation advisors who have the best track records in terms of getting their students through their programs quickly and well-placed in the job market.

It is possible to do a PhD in 3 years or less depending on the discipline.
For agronomic field-based studies, one may need to set up the experiment (which sometimes may be dependent on the weather patterns), take data, analyse and write the thesis.
For laboratory studies-based studies, the duration may be shorter.
In all these, a lot depends on the Student and the supervisory committee.
One trick is to start whatever experiment in the first year, repeat in the second year whilst simultaneously writing the literature review and preliminary chapters.
Then dedicate most part of the 3rd year to the writing and finalising of the thesis.

Thr actual research work happened from year 3 to the middle of year 5 (though the proposal and concept were conceived during the earlier years).

Yes, it is possible to complete a PhD in 3 years. In my case, I listed all academic requirements (IRB approval, publications, required courses, qualifying exam, writing proficiency test) and completed one by one. I studied 16-18 hours a day most of the time. Having a comprehensive plan was also useful for me to complete my PhD on time.
Depends on many factors, in our PhD program (Plant Breeding and Biotechnology) it was from 3 to 6 years in general, mostly 4 (still have two or three students in in their 6th-to-7th year and still much to go. There is a lot involved (health, money, availability of biological material, whether conditions, supervision, and most importantly, levels of commitment and knowledge/expertise of the subject area by the student and the supervisory committee). Try to work very had, set daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly plans and try as much as possible to achieve them.
Whether you spend 3 or more years, make sure the Ph.D. really upgrades you both scientifically and professionally; you're meant to become an expert in a particular field after Ph.D. completion.

I did my PhD study in the UK. I took my viva in 2 years and 11 months, then took me another 2 months for final minor corrections.
In most countries the range years for PhD study is from 3-5 years. How soon you finish it depends on how hard you have worked and how much you have achieved the study objectives.

Yes, it's possible only if you are regular with your research and completing the minimum requirements (articles and conference) required in your university within 3 years. You just have to be regular and active with the research work, otherwise it will get extended from three years to four years.
Claro que es posible, depende principalmente del doctorando y que sea perseverante, optimista, responsable, consagrado, inteligente y este motivado a hacerlo. Por supuesto debe tener a su disposición los medios necesarios para avanzar.
It is possible to do it in even less than three years, provided all the required ressources are available and accessible anytime to need them.
Moreover, it will also depend on you and your dedication to read, understand the key concepts of your research field, and work smart to produce results.
Based on my small experience, the real and serious work begins after a period of nine months or even one year.
Those first months/year will help to warm-up and get into the research mood !
Then, will the help of your supervisors, you'll be able to manage all the research activities and see if you can be able to complete within the stipulated timeframe.
