I have an acrylic sheet of 2mm thickness and I want to use this as a substrate on which piezoelectric material (eg. Barium Titanate, PZT, Zinc oxide or other) and metals (eg. aluminum, steel, tungsten, platinum or other) can be coated to form different layers! Will it be an option to use this acrylic sheet as a substrate? And if yes how to proceed? Also I need to know the methods of coating for mentioned materials? Will anyone help me to do this?
To coat an acrylic material on piezoel. mat. and metals will be easier, more probably.. ;-) What is a reason to do it reversely?
Actually I'm using acrylic sheet as a substrate of a cantilever beam and want to coat piezoelectric and metal layer on this substrate to use it as energy harvester. So is it possible to coat these materials on acrylic sheet as a substrate?
I have no experience with it, but my opinion is that it could be possible with using "inkjet printing" and good cooling of acrylic sheet.. Question is what accuracy should be printed piezo/metal material..
Accuracy upto 0.1mm or less! I never done such printing either! What to do or how to proceed for this?
there is no problem, the structure you have in mind can be attempted.
susing sputtered ZnO films which are piezoelectric.
You can try some experiments to coat metals and piezo layers on your acrylic sheet.
1) Deposit you metals layers by sputtering to get good adhesion.
2) You can deposit ZnO by sputtering , and this can be done at room temperature.
without any heating.
ZnO is the best choice and the only option.
All other piezoelectric are having complex compositions, and require
heating during deposition to a high temperature, and this will not be compatible with your acrylic substrate material.
2A) You must ensure that the pizo ZnO layer is growing with a preferential c-axis orientation on the deposited metal layer grown on the acylic substrate.
2B) Metals like chromium, gold etc can be useful.
2c) The metal layers should stick will to acrylic, good adhesion, and must be smooth enough.
There should be no heating involved anywhere, otherwise it will spoil the acrylic substrate and deposited layers.
3) If you are talking about multilayers, yes this is possible.
If you have a two target sputtering system.
One target becomes the choice of your metal.
The other can be Zinc, which can be reactively sputtered in oxygen.
Alternate between the metal layers and the ZnO piezo deposition.
4) Care should be taken to shield the targets from one another in the sputtering system.
5) A good knowledge of the deposition rates of the metal and piezo layer deposition prior to the main experiment, of building up the multilayer stack.

Dear Rohit,
There are piezoplastic materials that are rather easily coated onto other plastic layers, to which metal layers can be added; we have built such transducers (though for Doppler measurement purposes rather than energy harvesting) -- see Cannata et al, Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, Nov 2012, attached, for references on the actual procedures.
