According to CABI, the pathogen can be spread with seeds contaminated with needle debris, but infection of cone tissue is not known. That's not to say that you can't collect cones and check. Since pines are gymnosperms "naked seed", it's possible that the "wing" of a pine nut could contain mycelium of the pathogen. On the other hand, CABI lists plenty of other methods of spread for the disease, including air and insect.
