I'm trying to make bariumaluminosilicate glass with sol-gel process using their nitrate salts. To my great surprise each time I add aluminium nitrate solution to barium nitrate solution, a white precipitate forms that will only clear with addition of acid and increasing the temperature. I have not been able to find the reaction behind it. Can anyone help me with that?
Dear Kiana, it is rather unlikely that pure nitrates of aluminum and barium will react with each other when mixed in aqueous solutions. The most likely explanation is that you have some basic impurities in one of your precursor salts (e.g. barium hydroxide in your barium nitrate) which could cause the precipitation of Al(OH)3. This will easily redissolve upon addition of acid.
