Based on references I've read, the dehydration of xylose to form furfural requires heating (most of them above 100°C) in the presence of a strong acid. However, I was wondering if it's possible to bypass the heating process.
I think heating is the only process in the literature to convert xylose into furfurals. Actually high temperature is always required for the formation of furfurals.
The feasibility of the reaction depends on the reaction conditions. Please calculate the change of Gibbs free energy of the reaction UNDER THE CONDITIONS you have for the reaction.
