On a 70km stretch of coast in Eastern Australia, there have been 13 shark attacks since September 2014: an average rate of one shark attack every nine weeks. The majority of these sharks were great whites, which have been protected for 20 years, to allow the population to replenish. The government has formed a committee to hear submissions from the public; so I am hoping to compose a sound ethical argument against the protection of great white sharks.
The debate has attracted a lot of media attention, including a BBC documentary entitled Australia's Shark Menace, available on YouTube (link below). The debate is also raging online, typically on Facebook, where I run a page called Ballina Happens. I do my best to appear neutral, but as a surfer, my bias is sometimes difficult to disguise.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
