I think that some alternatives are possible but really dependent on each application. I think that the first aspect should be the reduction of cooling only where and when really needed, to reduce the useless energy consumption. The remaining cooling can be provided with generation sources more environment-friendly.
In particular, solar cooling could be an option to provide cooling by exploiting solar radiation. Some options are absorption chillers coupled to thermal collectors or heat pumps supplied by PV panels. These systems are being used in multiple applications, but in many countries their cost remains higher than the traditional technologies.
In general, I think that we are not missing the technologies, but rather we are choosing them only looking at cost, without considering the environmental aspects. I think we should drastically change our minds: if we not care about our environment we will definitely destroy it...

First move is to love the environment and remove the AC. Second move is to insulate the building and have plants around which produce natural air stream.
Well, I personally think that our generation is not interested in choosing alternatives and will only make an effort in using a single switch system such as AC , Coolers etc. while other simple alternatives are still available or can be used in our daily lives so as to protect ourselves as well as the environment from the damage.
Small efforts can make big changes which can indeed help us to wait until the last possible moment to even turn on the AC because once it’s on, there is hardly any going back.
Some of the basic efforts can be as simple as closing the curtains to help deflect sunlight or to increase the insulation one can use double pane windows to save the energy by keeping the cool air indoors. Solar energy is well developed now and thus those options should also be used like using a solar attic fan, which will not only just decrease the hot air trapped in space making home easier to cool but will also decrease the cooling bill. Coming home from the sun, instead of turning on the AC or cooler directly one can keep a wet washcloth in fridge and can be used around the neck or feet for personal cooling. Also, we should use summer diet so as to make our body cop up with the heat.
Basically, we all are dependent on scientists and environmentalists to save the air around us, but taking some responsibility of the same air we can contribute little by taking small easy steps which can surely make a difference.
Old buildings with massive walls and natural air movements can teach us a lot. These houses and castles that were made before airconditions are often very effecient at keeping cool inside.
I hope in the future we can have more automatisation that allows buildings to shift between natural cooling by air being drawn through and only using airconditioning.
