It is, and it is a very important and interesting matter in the field of intralingual translation
It is an interesting matter. In fact, you could even start from the concept of "mainland" （大陸), since it got socio-linguistic and political implications. The necessity to specify that there is a continental China is linked to the belief that there is a not-continental (hence, insular) China as well. Without an insular China, there won't be a necessity of a dichotomy. During my stay in southern Taiwan, where I was surrounded by people that use "min" as the first language (and in general consider Taiwan as an independent country) I seldom heard people speaking of 大陸, but everyone calls it China (中国）in contrast with Taiwan. In Taipei, the use of the term 大陸 was common (at least it was my feeling). I hope it may be a good point for you.
It is a good thing to do; who knows, the concept may not even mean the same thing in the two variants of the same language.
