It all depends on which company/industry the student is offered an internship. I used to work at what was the world's second largest computer company in its heyday. Internship was rewarding for those students who had the drive, had the curiosity, had the temperament to get out as much as was possible during their period with the company. Do remember that after a short introductory peiod of a day or two, the student should be capable of self-propelling himself/herself to take on tasks that he/she finds or even creates. The latter reflects a creative individual, and not everyone is creative, particularly at institutions where assessments are based on a diet of multiple-choice questions, "" fill-in-the blank" questions or questions that evoke one or two line answers. At my previous company, students had had the opportunity to do new things, to get exposed to cutting-edge technology, and to return back to their colleges/universitieswith new experience, new knowledge, in fact as a "transformed", enriched student...
That said, some firms particularly family-owned or small firms, have no scruples at using students to do work that no one wants to do or to do things that have been left undone because there were no resources. In the latter case, something worthwhile was still possible. I know of businesss students at one institution being sent by their company to do meaningless tasks such as helping in removal or moving office. Students should be wary, as should their institutions...
It all depends upon once, capability and enthuse to understand the need of industry.. But for some of the students it will really help for their improvement in the technical knowledge and skill.. In internship, the student should hands on experience, so he/she can get the knowledge and skill of the particular work..
