There are many kinds of innovations. Marketing innovation is mainly opportunity-seeking (to find new opportunity for an existing product or to find opportunity to develop a new product to meet the market need). Process innovation is mainly problem-solving (to solve a production problem, quality issue, etc...). R&D innovation and organizational innovation can be both problem-solving or opportunity-seeking.
Adding to Stanley's thoughts, one another area gaining prominence is business model innovation, which can be used from the perspective of both opportunity seeking or problem solving. While product and process innovation can be imitated, business model innovation (depending upon the nature of fit) is difficult to imitate and thereby gaining recognition among CEOs as a key to differentiation and competitive advantage.

Thanks for taking time to share your views and experiences. It would seem that innovation can be both a reactive and proactive exercise. Points to the need to contextualize innovation.Reminds me of Schumpeter's distinction between adaptive and creative response in economic innovations. Of time frames and the matching of internal & external environments. Of life cycles both of the organization, the industry and the economy.Wow there are so many issues to consider!
