It seems to me that there is always the private aspect to research ("inner workings") and the public aspect (externalization).Two instances come to mind when I consider the impact of research diaries: da Vinci and Darwin. Many have pore over these to try and understand the work methods of these thinkers.
Do you think it helps to see publication as foremost being clear by writing to oneself about research ideas? For many famous treatise were once private musings that was initially circulated within a closed circle, but eventually gained a wider audience through publication. Usually spurred on by a close friend or patron.
