How can GM technologies serve enough food for the human population which is growing rapidly every year and if we compare with sociocultural aspect of human, poverty and planting areas? Maybe we can increase the quality and quantity of food with genetically modified food, but it can’t compare with population growth. I come from Tanzania, recently my country has banned any use of GM foods. What do you think about the connection between population growth, poverty, quality and quantity of foods?
GM may be one of the approaches for helping to feed the world's growing population, but it is definitely not "the" answer. In fact, conventional breeding turbocharged with modern genomics, probably offers more promise to improving agriculture yields than GM.
So what is the answer? No silver bullet here, I am afraid. The World Resources Institute just published a report on how to sustainably feed the population in 2050. One of the sections examines the role of crop breeding:
