Is filing Patents necessary in academics,whats the weightage given to it?

As per the indian NIRF ranking system, the patent publication (the applicant should be the employer)get more important than others. In the view of Academic, publishing patents and articles in journals is not mandatory. Its a self development need. In the competitive world, improving our CV by journals and patents is get some more important than regular experience. In my view, the patent filing is a important (not necessary) key for academic.
