I am currently running an analysis on sandwich panels identation, my core is defined with the ABQ_HONEYCOMB VUMAT which includes damage initiation and propagation criteria (element deletion is active). Plus I use an adaptive mesh in order to avoid the core's element to distort.
I wonder if the element deletion and adaptive mesh are compatible : my analysis terminate early (strain = 27%) because of element distortion (even after refining my adaptive mesh parameters). I attach you a picture of the distortion and my adaptive mesh parameters.
I also tried to suppress the adaptive mesh but it only make the analysis stop earlier because of the distortion. No need to precise that I already tried with distortion control but that would increase way too much my reaction force and overall model energy.
If anyone has a lead on how to overcome this element distotion problem I would be pleased !

Not sure on how to answer directly to your question, but from your explanation, it feels like element deletion requires readjusting the mechanical equilibrium which seems to generate a slow numerical divergence with evolutive analysis and since you remesh each time, this divergence seems not taken into account into the analysis after remeshing which leads to calculation crash. It seems you have a localization problem even without remeshing probably due to your damage propagation criteria.
Not sure this will answer but maybe give you a hint ...
I have met the distortion error with high velocity impact analysis, I tried doing analysis with some changes as follow:
1. check your model with the coarser mesh
2. remeshing your mesh with element ratio closed 1:1:1
3. using adaptive mesh with other frequency and sweep (example: 5 and 20-30..)
I hope it will be useful for you.
I experienced similar difficulties at very large deformations. Remedy was to use SPH. SPH can be easily switched on and tuned (Mesh module).
