Previously, or presently in some universities you could become a professor through publications without going through the PhD avenue or without a PhD. This is in the sense that there are persons who were prolific in scientific research writing despite having not acquired a PhD. Please assist, i need academic views on this because we intend to put this into academic staff rationalization process.
I would argue that the completion of a traditional PhD does not necessarily translate to the ability to publish. Although there are transferable skills that can assist in publishing, writing papers and navigating the process of journal selection, writing to a specific journal, dealing with reviewers and editors, etc. etc. are explicit skills that need to be learnt and practiced. That is why many universities are moving toward models of doctoral education that require or encourage candidates to publish during their candidature, and to include those outputs in their thesis.
