Data Driven learning is a direct application of Corpus linguistics. it has proved to be very influential in English language teaching. But how can it be applied in large classrooms?
Using DDL in large classrooms can be quite challenging.
Basically, DDL is designed to enhance learners' autonomy. This approach to teaching can be integrated with other methods to teach learners how to learn and develop their thinking skills or metacognition. It is necessary to mention that the three main steps that learners can follow to identify, classify and generalize information about the target corpora require a highly supportive guidance on the part of the teacher, especially with a large number of students. Yet it can help them to learn outside the classroom environment. In addition to this, learners can be active participants in the learning process instead of being only the passive receivers of knowledge they can have their own chance to discover interesting, valuable aspects about the target language.
Thanks Eman. What you mentioned is quite true but what if we begin teaching grammar by DDL with freshmen students. We can begin with simple corpora we make or take DDL activities done by us at home and introduce it to them step by step.
I think it is possible in computer -equipped classrooms with the use of online corpora. A friend of mine did her PhD on the topic and one of her findings supported its use as it is the teacher who keeps track of learners'actions on computers abd how much time they spend on each activity in addition to designing the syllabus based on online corpora.
Thanks Shatha I agree with you 100%. The challenges we face in our Universities are quite difficult to deal with . I'm doing a small research on the effect of DDL approach on Grammar teaching and learning, till now every thing is going great but I can tell that there will be some challenges ahead.
