I am writing a paper on convicted murderer Diogo Alves, whose head is currently in a jar in the Anatomy Theater at the University of Lisbon. It was preserved, originally, in formalin in 1841. It is now in a solution of formaldehyde, and has been for 173 years. At his hanging, he was described as having black hair and brown eyes. The preserved head has strawberry blond/reddish hair and faded blue eyes. Is it possible that the difference in color is due to prolonged exposure to formaldehyde? There is a theory that the head doesn't belong to Diogo as claimed.
