Anyway, in Bulgaria polytrauma in childhood is relatively rare. Those are victims of road accidents, falls from height or "battered child"-syndrome. On the other hand, the treatment is problematic if there are severe injuries to head, thorax, abdomen,etc. The best treatment may be accomplished in a specialist multi-profile hospital or unit for pediatric trauma, where a combined team of specialists are working together in similar severe cases.

In Sofia there exists the Pirogov Emergency Medicine Hospital with clinics for pediatric traumatology,abdominal and thoracic surgery, urology and neurosurgery and these colleagues work in team when children with polytrauma are admitted . I find it very reasonable.

With proper trauma systems in place and the introduction of designated level one trauma hospitals for children, kids suffering from poly trauma tend to do very well in Australia even with high ISS scores. Our problem is more with the children who have sustained significant cerebral damage or hypoxia at the scene, whether from isolated head injuries, suffocation or non-fatal drownings.
