I have published two IEEE Conference papers on Cellular Manufacturing,as I wish to pursue my PhD on Cellular Manufacturing in US/Canada. However, now a days, 3D printing can manufacture any commodity that we can design on a computer, does that mean Cellular Manufacturing is coming to a watery grave sooner than later? Should I still continue to work on Cellular Manufacturing?

I am a PhD student of China, whose research focuses on CM. It seems that CM is a little obsolete. The number of researchers on CM is very small.
Maybe you can find some new things in the research of CM.

I want to help, but I am so sorry that I am still pursuing my Phd. When I read some publications, I find that most of the recent publications on CM are from Iran. Really, I think maybe this topic is obsolete.
When you ask me a topic, I really want to say that I am not confident in my research. I am still struggling my PhD degree and I don't think that I am professional enough to give you a topic.

Cellular Mfg aims to reduce movement (of jobs) between cells & maximize movements of jobs within cells. It reduces CONFUSION AND ANARCHY on the SHOP FLOOR. And factory becomes more manageable. If product mix changes, then if we have the flexibility redesign cells, it is even better.
By having additional copies of each machine (or processes), we can implement PRODUCT layout (by using CM), where each cell is assigned to few products,
So it is requirements that drive the choice of production systems: it could be JIT; MRP II; or FMS or OPT.; OR the system recommended by GOLDRATT (I am unable to recall its exact name at the moment). It may not be appropriate to say that CM has become OUTDATED. Any one production system can not address to all kinds of requirements.

Now, I am sure that I can certainly continue with CM & later on expand my area of research. In CM, can you suggest any particular topic with which I should proceed?

How additional copies of machines be added (considering cost of machines in terms of investments as Ist obj) and reduction in traffic between cells (as second objectives) & give non-dominated solutions; 2. How FMS cell be organized to get max benefit in terms of product variety and production volume.

If you have a passion to do a PhD on CM then you should be able to find a topic to research, even if it means exploring links between CM and other systems within the organisation, such quality, lean, ICT etc. You could also explore the impact of CM on modern high profile products such as smartphones, notebooks, laptops, computers etc.
