I want to get carbon molecule by using methane gas plasma. I mainly want to know that if methane gas decompose stepwise and in first step is there methyl (CH3) radical or CH3 anion or cation will form ??
Methane is the primary industrial H2 source, with the vast majority produced by steam reforming of methane—a highly CO2- and water-intensive process. Alternatives to steam reforming, such as microwave-driven plasma-mediated methane decomposition, offer benefits of no water consumption and zero CO2 process emissions while also producing solid carbon formed by pyrolytic reactions and aided by a plasma reactive environment. The plasma-driven gas-phase thermal decomposition of methane yielding hydrogen and solid-phase carbon suggested as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional methods of producing hydrogen from natural gas. The advantage of the process is that hydrogen is obtained directly from methane without producing CO2 as a byproduct. The process experimentally examined using a modified version of a dc plasma reactor originally developed for the conversion of methane to acetylene. Carbon yields of 30%, a factor of 6 increases, with a corresponding decrease in acetylene yield were obtained by simply increasing the residence or reaction time.
In the presence of oxygen methane when combusted produces carbon dioxide and water.
But I want only carbon by decomposition of methane not CO2 or water..@ Paul Reed Hepperly
The ability to get carbon in absence of carbon dioxide and water depends on creating a pyrolysis or a process which vents the water and oxygen from the system. This is the process of creating charcoal or biochar the creation of heating without oxygen.
