if you see the nodules on the roots of plants (Artemisia or other),
this is an indice of nitrogen fixation

Many thanks, all. Particularly the article recommended by Arvind (Farnsworth et al. 1976), that cites a paper by Wallace and Romney (1972), in which A. tridentata is described as a N fixer. Seems that root nodulation only occurs when climatic conditions are favourable.
