I am doing some research looking at the effects of educational software for teachers and speech and language therapists working with learners on the ASD.
I'm not sure how helpful I'll be in the conversation other than to say there are researchers in Edinburgh researching this... look up Thusha Rajendran at Hariot Watt University. We (my student and I) tried a single-subject pilot on an n-back (working memory) training protocol (low functioning male early 20s, 15min/day, 4days/wk for a month) and tested for transfer on a range of tasks, and curiously he only improved on matrix reasoning (big gain). No change seen on digit span (forwards or backwards), block design, or trail making task (A and B).
My own line of research is focusing on improving executive functions in adolescents with ASD using cognitive training. To date, I have run 26 subjects and have significant results in some areas of executive function.
This sounds really interesting, I don't know how useful I would be in discussion but I would definitely be interested in hearing more about it! Some studies have implied that co-ordination, decision making and attention has been positively affected by playing video games, though I doubt those were for educational games.
