You'll get complete the full infarct after 24h (some papers argue that the infarct still evolve after that, but if so the changes are small in rats), after 1 week the infarcted brain parenchyma will be replaced by infiltrated macrophages and microglia with an astrocytic scar and after 3-4 weeks this will start to be replaced by CSF. After 3 months, the place where the infarct was will be replaced by a cavity (smaller than the initial infarct due to surrounding tissue collapsing) filled with CSF.
We are also working on MCAO stroke model in Rats. You can wait minimum of 72hr to get cystic infarct in rats brain and 7days also be good. Infarct formation starts 1.5hr of stroke induction and progressively grow in size up to 24 hr after stroke induction and after that infarct size get to stabilized state at 72hr post stroke. You can find a very minimum variation in infarct size after 24hr. Due to reduction of brain edema you can see starting of cystic formation after 3days.

Hi, the problem is rat's brain heal quickly. Sometimes in 2 weeks I could not see the difference. Do you guys have a standard way to measure your occlusion beside laser doppler that is extremely expensive in Jakarta. Thanks for the answer
