Tourism & Sustainability in Cabo Verde Project

Key objective: To describe and analyse the social and economic inequalities across the nine inhabited islands and the impact of tourism both in terms of exacerbating unequal development and increasing economic vulnerability of Cabo Verde as a whole.

Key purpose: To contribute to the proposed Cabo Verde National Tourism Strategy 2017-2027.

Broad context: Population differences across the islands; dramatic increase in tourism over past 20 years; increasing dependence on tourism (50% of GNI and employment); increasing wealth but increasing inequality.

Skewed tourism development: Sal and Boa Vista

Skewed population shift to Sal and Boa Vista (and Santiago to lesser extent)

Social impacts: eg, ‘indentured’ prostitution in Santa Maria (and Boa Vista?)

Environmental issues: eg, un exemplar of integrated, community-based tourism/environmental initiatives is the Maio Biodiversity Foundation

Corruption: eg, 200 beach apartments in Porto Inglés

Social inequities: eg, access to health services in Brava and Santo Antão

Transportation issues: eg, freight services for fresh moving produce between the islands.
