I am learning about the knowledge of Photoluminescence and time resolved Photoluminescence. I would like ask are there any relationships between their spectrums? can they be transformed to each other by Fourier transformation? are they obtained in the same instrument? thanks a lot.
Hi Xu, they are rather different "beasts". Photo-luminescence typically gives you an idea of the emission intensity or spectrum of a material on excitation with a particular energy / wavelength and is most typically when the material is in equilibrium so there is no change over time under continuous irradiation. This is used to get an idea of what optical transitions are occurring in a material - what wavelength absorption is occurring at, and what wavelength the emission is occurring at.
Time resolved PL measures the variation of intensity over time, and uses a pulsed light source. This gives you information about how long the absorption - to emission process takes so provides information about the lifetimes of the different optical transitions. The instrument for this is effectively counting the arrival time of individual photons, so typically it must be able to measure a much weaker signal. The measurement and pulse times, may vary from nanosconds in "fast" materials, to many seconds, in "slow" phosphors such as zinc sulphide.
Dear Xu, I would higly recommend you the book of Lakowicz "Principles of Fluorescence Spectroscopy" where you can find all the informations you are looking for. In fact, there is a relation between the fluorescence spectrum and the fluorescence lifetime known as the Strickler-Berg-Equation.
