Many futurists predict that education is going to shift away, possibly for a short time till they adapt, from conventional academic institutions in favor of a more democratic and global education system primarily based online. What will this, if true, do to research funding, competition for teaching positions, etc. How do people feel about this? Crisis or opportunity, merely hype?
most certainly YES! schools have for a number of reasons have reduced concentrations to math, science and technology. This has been done primarily to feed the Nano-Science community.
Shift in academic institutions will always come. Change is permanent
It is interesting that thus question from 2013 came up in my question feed in May of 2017. In the five years intervening, there have been no such changes.
I do NOT think we will see such a major shift. The proposition cited makes the assumption that learning occurs only in the classroom (or online course). This is a major fallacy. A student's time at university is a major time of maturation, broadening of horizons, and development. Many of the lessons learned are social, work ethic, and time-management oriented. Such lessons largely are NOT learned when sitting at home in one's pajamas, taking an online class.
