I made an iron powder core of the following specifications:
Radius : 65mm
Length : 10mm
Mass of iron used : 10% mass fraction (20g)
Total mass : 200g
Binder : Slow cure epoxy
I noticed that after curing, the iron powdered settled at the bottom and formed a thin layer. The core also did not increased the magnetic field strength of the magnet. As I don't have enough epoxy to make more cores, I'm wondering if anyone know if the lack of improvement is due to the amount of iron used, the fact that the iron settled at the bottom of something else I may not have considered.

The magnetic permeability of the core of a solenoid magnet affects the strength of the magnetic field produced, in certain regions near the solenoid.
some proposals to improve the intensity of the field:
reduce the radius of the cylinder
increase the iron fraction in the epoxy
previously magnetize the iron to provide significant remanent magnetization
Curing should proceed in presence of the axial magnetic field. In result, the iron particles will be better ordered, i.e. their longest axes will be oriented accordingly to the field. This way the final product will have well defined easy axis of magnetization.
Seshadri; Yes; it is a travesty that books use the same word 'uniform' the describe fields in both cored and coreless solenoids.. When we sprinkle iron filings onto a page covering an upright solenoid is they group around the perimeter (none in the center). Only cored solenoids have true uniformity but as you say here even it marginally stronger near the perimeter.
Magnetic forces become logical when we overcome the illusion conjured over a century ago by Oersted's compass and see that it flows parallel with its current.
