iOS development: Does anyone know how to make GIS location readings on iOS when the app is not focused?

I'm researching options to develop an app that is able to read periodically current device GIS location and store it into a local file. It works well when app is focused, but when I press the "home" button, and app gets unfocused (in task bar) it appears that no more events from location sensor is received. What I am looking for is a solution where app, once unfocused to task bar, still can read device location in given time period (eg. every 10 minutes it will attempt to read current location).

Anyone experienced with this?
