Jude, in our faculty of health we´re offering three interdisciplinary programmes: A bachelor programme for nursing and midwifery called Applied Health Sciences (BA),  a bachelor programme for nurses, physio- and occupational therapists called Interprofessional health sciences and a programme for medical-technical assistants in laboratory, radiology and operating room called Medical-technical Sciences. Hello, Marcel and thanks for writing -- your work does sound interesting!  I'm particularly looking, right now, at how you do evaluation in programs that have more than one professional discipline in training.  I'm the Coordinator for Graduate Nursing Programs at this University and we are just starting to have courses that any student in a healthcare profession can take (for example, Interprofessional Issues in Rural Public Health, which is a public health course that I teach, focuses on cultural competency and health disparities).  Do you have courses like that (sounds like the nurses, PT and OT might be similar)?  Also, do you have Nurse Practitioners?  (I primarily teach NPs)...

Dr. Ahmed -- thanks for your reply.  Right now I'm working to bring all these students together in one public health course where they focus on health disparities -- they'll have initial training with standardized patients, etc, before we send them out to tribal reservations, to work with rural elders or Somali refugees.  I'm particularly interested to see if there are parallels in others' work globally and if so, how you evaluate your efforts, etc. (right now, I'm using the IPEC "domains" and objectives).  It would be wonderful to ultimately develop a global learning consortium -- I'm planning to go to the EIPEN in August in the Netherlands...

Hello, M E Jude, we have baccalaureate nursing program (4 years), Post Basic Diploma in Nursing (2 years course to upgrade diploma nursing), post basic diploma – 1 year specialty course ( in different areas like oncology, orthopedic, neuro, cardio, critical care, operation room…..) and masters in Medical surgical nursing, Community health nursing, Mental health nursing, maternity nursing and child health nursing. We have MPhil and PhD programs too. All these programs are offered at nursing college. I teach BSc nursing, post basic diploma and master (medical surgical nursing). Other disciplines such as OT, PT, MPT, etc are available under the same university, but in another institution (allied health institution). Both nursing and allied health institution is under Manipal University. Does this sounds useful?

Good Morning, Latha -- thanks for your note.  Do you have a Nurse Practitioner MSN?  FNPs in the US function as primary care providers (prescriptive authority, autonomous practice, etc.), usually working with physicians and, hopefully, other professions such as OT, PT, etc.  I'm interested in looking at how other countries do interprofessional education among healthcare disciplines (to include pharmacy, OT/PT students, undergrad nursing, counseling and graduate nursing students.  Wondering if you have those options?

Hi, M E Jude, We do not have nurse practitioner course. We do have all other courses which you have mentioned, offered under Manipal University. However, each of these courses are evaluated as per the guidance of professional regulatory bodies.  

Dear M.E. Jude, if you are thinking interdisciplinary maybe it is worthwhile to think of oral care and some degree of education about oral diseases and their diagnosis and treatment as well. Mostly the oral cavity is neglected, however with 50 to 80% of the adult population having periodontal infections i.e. an open non healing wound in their periodontium, the impact on general health is scientifically evident. A focus is on diabetics CVD and women planning to have a baby. I have collected a lot of studies and am working to educate dentists and GP's from a healthcare industry reps perspective. I have developed IVD test for the rapid and easy detection of PD for the GP comunity in order to get patients at risk to see their periodontist. If you are intersted I can  share my collection of studies regarding perio and systemic diseases. . Unfortunately the tests are not approved in the US so we can not provide them. In Nigeria there is no Nurse Practitioner program, but sure there are NPs who trained elsewhere and who are trying to fit into the system. however what is the focus of your study? Which group of health professionals are you working with?

When you are thinking interdisciplinary team, are you thinking of Respiratory Therapists as well?  I didn't see this discipline in the post.  Respiratory Therapists work along side Nurses in the treatment of the patient.  They work on the code team, provide respiratory treatments and also attend interdisciplinary rounds in our institution.  I know of an assistant professor of nursing that would be interested.

My goodness!  This is all very helpful!  I'm specifically looking at Nurse Practitioner training programs (Master's level) and seeking out programs where they train NPs, physicians, dentists, pharmacists, OTs, PTs, nurses together to learn how to work together in primary care settings (e.g. respecting one another's skills, input, abilities, knowledge and really understanding the other roles and how they complement one another).  When I speak of "global partners", I'm thinking that I would like to compare and contrast our system with those of others around the globe (perhaps leading to shared scholarship?) -- I'm interested as well in the methods one uses to evaluate such trainings.  We have one system here at our school, where we use the domains developed by the IPE Collaborative (on the national level), but I would like to see what else is out there -- thinking we in the US do not necessarily have all the answers!  The focus, as mentioned, is on primary care and not acute hospital care.  There are groups in the US who have done work with oral health (and I have a long hx of working with them), but in the setting I'm in currently, there is no dental school with whom to collaborate.  It is possible that I could ultimately develop something with the Dental School at the University of New England, but that is brand new and probably best to give them a little space to get their feet under them!  Many thanks to you all for your input!

To everyone who expressed an interest in international partners and oral public health.  Chris Ivanoff, you can find him within Research Gate, has started a program which is gaining traction, for student and faculty exchanges in oral health.  The program "Global Oral Health Initiative (GOHI)"."  He presented his cross-national clerkship and pre-doctoral cultural competence framework to a DOD conference, and has had several successful exchanges with other dental schools around the globe.  I understand that King Saud University is already partnered with the University of   Tennessee in building medical emergency capability.  Relationships have been established with schools in India, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Brazil and Greece.  Send me your email address and I will introduce you.

I have done an interprofessional education / training as a Curriculum Innovation Project under the auspices of FAIMER in a rural nursing college in Kerala, India and it was presented at the International HPE conference in Hyderabad . 

Hello Mary, I am from a Primary care setting in Singapore and we have done some small work in holding interprofessional collaborative practice workshops .  We are in a practice setting but with a learning organisation mindset .  Most glad to collaborate and find out more about potential areas we can learn from each other.

I have my active interest and project on IPE / IPC and have done some preliminary work in training of real teams (driven by nursing staff and students) in neonatal resuscitation in Kerala, India....and have now taken up an Interdisciplinary training / curriculum and submitted the same for my masters in HPE
